State Intensification of on-going national rivers and streams

Project Description

State Intensification of on-going national rivers and streams assessment conducted on a 5-year rotation. Leverage funds and efforts by the EPA and TCEQ to expand upon river and streams assessments allowing for state-level data analysis on fish communities, and habitat and landscape-level variables. Opportunity to expand study sites to include re-evaluation of historic study sites, and/or retain/sample SGCNs and invasive species for genetic or other habitat association assessments.

NFCA Objectives

Project Hierarchy: Moderate (i.e., needs to occur within the next 3-5 years)
Estimated Cost Range: $50,000-$100,000

Suggested Contact: Jenny Oakley, George Guillen, Stephen Curtis

This project provides the opportunity to leverage on-going research in a broad spatial scale at sites that are usually otherwise un-studied or inaccessible (due to private property access) to fill data gaps of community structure of native freshwater fishes, and provide opportunity for additional project development and collaboration.

This NRSA project is funded by the EPA through the TCEQ, and if TPWD were able to provide partial funding to implement a state-level intensification perhaps multiple agencies would benefit from the additional data collection; SWG, AIS.

Project Location

Project is state-wide. Typically ~ 80 sites, randomly distributed in rivers and streams (boatable and wadeable). Opportunity to add additional sites either hand selected based on known data gaps, or re-evaluation of historic collections. Also can have additional sites provided by EPA using their stratified random design to allow for state-level assessment.
